Garlic, onion and sour foods, or how survive the Polish winter?

Although we have global warming, winter is coming soon. The temperature can drop to 20 or even 30 degrees below zero. There will be snow, shorter days and less daylight. The season for colds and the flu is coming. So how do you survive the massive attack of viruses and bacteria? According to nutritionists, you should reach for garlic, onions and sour foods, but not only that.

Short days, it’s dark, cold and wet. Viruses and bacteria love such conditions. When your immunity decreases, they will attack you and knock you down.

Sometimes the infection is mild, although a runny nose is nothing pleasant. However, when you have symptoms such as fever, headache, bone and muscle pain, photophobia, and a feeling of discomfort, don’t take it lightly. Don’t try to heal yourself. It could be the flu. Seek medical help.

Even when your body tells you to hibernate, you can stay fit and in a good mood, no matter the weather. It is important that you dress properly, because chilled body is an ideal target for germs. So, remember to:

The daily menu should include a warming breakfast. – It could be, for example, porridge with cinnamon, honey and tangerines – says Natalia Czech, adding that all these products warm you up. During the day, there should be soup and a warm main course. You should include in your meals the following: groats, brown rice, lentils, poultry, beef, fish, peppers, garlic, onions and leeks.

The body should also be strengthened with natural sources of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. That is why vegetables and fruits should be the basis of the daily menu. They supply us with valuable ingredients that even the best supplements cannot provide.

Keep fit

The immune system is strengthened by moderate exercise. Excessive physical effort can even weaken the immune system. Moderate exercises are those that last at least 40 minutes, but do not lead to fatigue. Thanks to them, you will stay healthy, control your weight and relieve stress related to insufficient amount of daylight.

In order to keep fit in winter, you also need to rest. 7 hours of sleep is the minimum required for your immune system and regeneration.

You should also remember to wash your hands frequently, especially after visiting public places.

And what if I get ill?

If you get ill, first of all get some rest, advises Natalia Czech. Such symptoms as a running nose or temperature can be with medication.

Second – proper diet also matters.

Vitamin C may not protect us from catching a cold, but once we catch it, it will shorten the duration of the disease. So, increase its amount with food (the best sources are: paprika, green parsley, citrus, sour foods) and take it in the form of supplements.

High-quality honey (preferably dark buckwheat or honeydew) is also good if you are ill – it also helps to relieve a sore throat and cough. It should be remembered that in order not to lose its valuable properties, it should not be added to hot tea. In case of severe sore throats, a brew of linseed seeds or fruit kissel will also bring relief.

The broth prepared from a large amount of vegetables and lean meat cannot be overestimated – it also helps with a sore throat and a running nose. You can add a piece of ginger and garlic, which acts as a natural antibiotic.
